In days long gone, an essential piece of equipment for a soldier about to enter combat was mail armor (today most often called chainmail). With mail between him and his enemy’s attacks, his chances of survival on the battlefield were greatly increased against cutting blows. It was so effective that in one form or another it lasted from about the 5th to the 14th century as the major armor for the common soldier and it often represented the greatest asset he owned. While our battles are far less likely to end up with more than a slight bruise from the occasional die thrown in playful jest, we find a distinct pleasure in bringing mail to our gaming table. There is something special about holding a piece of handcrafted mail in your hand, a direct link to a point in history when the world was a very different place. What better way for a gamer to store their precious polyhedral weapons then this authentic mail bag?
Handcrafted with a concern for quality by armorer Khat Jackson, this bag is made with the 4 in 1 butted mail style common in early European mail design. Each ring has a diameter of 1/2 inch and is made of 14 gauge steel wire (AWG). The rings are made using the shear and cut method. This method results in a better quality ring (versus the pinch cut method used on lesser grade mail) and creates a smooth surface that will not snag on your skin or your dice. This bag closes with a leather drawstring and a polished wooden ball (nothing to tie off, just pull it closed and go). It measures roughly 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/2 inches tall and holds around 7 polyhedral RPG dice of standard size. This particular bag is closed at the bottom with the pocket pattern which allows it to lay down on its side easier.
If you’re like us, you’ll enjoy this handcrafted piece of history lying beside you as you enter battle. The cool metal of the chainmail, the raw leather of the string, and the polished wooden ball just feel right to us. We think once you see and feel Khat’s work, you’ll understand exactly what we mean. If you are looking for a unique dice bag, look no further than this.
